A Simple Way to Be a More Efficient and Effective Person

The purpose of this post is to share with you a fairly simple way to become a more efficient and effective person by questioning the purpose of everything you (and others) do.

Imagine how much more you could accomplish if you became more effective and efficient as a person.  If this is of value to you, you should do two things:

  • Spend time reading and understanding this post
  • Put the suggestions made on this post into practice for a few days

Some time ago, I learned the importance of keeping purpose in the forefront of everything I do.  I believe there is, or there should be, a specific purpose behind everything we do individually and collectively.  Furthermore, I believe that in order to be more efficient and effective, we should question the purpose behind everything we do.  When I keep purpose in mind, I get a better sense of why I should or should not do something.  It allows me to evaluate the value of a task, a project, a meeting, etc.  I like to ask the team at Remote DBA Experts for the purpose of a lot of things.  There are many ways to get to purposes.  One way is to ask questions such as:

  • What is the purpose of…?
  • What am I trying to accomplish?
  • Why am I doing this?
  • What am I doing this for?
  • Who am I doing this for?

Please keep in mind that sometimes there are “hidden” purposes.  The best way to uncover these hidden purposes is to ask for the purpose multiple times.  You should be able to determine the bottom-line purpose by asking “the question” until there is no purpose left.

Alignment

Another big benefit of constantly asking for the purpose is to make sure we are spending time and effort in alignment with our roles and goals.  It is so easy to get distracted and even confused when we have a lot on our plates.  Highly effective people keep their focus and attention on the things that matter most to their roles and goals.  The best way to keep yourself and others aligned is to question your and their purpose often.  You would be surprised how much of what we do is either off-purpose or, even worse, at cross-purposes with our roles and goals.

If you get in the habit of asking “What is the Purpose of…?” you’ll have a better chance of staying aligned to your real/actual purpose as it relates to your key roles and goals.

Now you should try it!
