The Fuel of Change
This post is for individuals who are looking for ways to make change happen for themselves or others.
In my experience, nothing fuels action to change more than a good reason. If you want to energize yourself and/or others for change, especially difficult changes, spend significant effort indentifying the best and most compelling reasons for change.
In a prior post, I wrote about the challenges of change. Personal and organizational habits are hard to break. The main reason is that habits become “wired” in our individual and collective brains over time and rewiring our brain takes effort and time.
When we have carefully thought about great reasons for change and we make the strongest connection, we power a change “propulsion system” with the best fuel available.
I suggest using an emotional connection. The reasons for change must be emotionally compelling in order to be most effective as fuel. They must really engage you and/or others. You must feel the energy.
One way to find the best reasons is to think of the things that matter most to you and/or others. Once you have those things identified, use them as the objects for reason exploration.
Remember that the more effort you spend making these connections, the more energy you’ll have to help you overcome the natural challenges of rewiring the brain connections. I believe that if you spend time upfront you will dramatically increase the chances of permanent change enactment.
Try it!
