Sustainable Success Factors

Success requires a lot of different factors depending on situations and circumstances.  In this post, I share four factors I see as essential to the process:

  • Attitude
  • Aptitude
  • Approach
  • Action

Attitudes

Attitude is the key factor for success.  It is the foundation.  It is the way we think about ourselves, others, and about the “world”.  It is the way we see things, the way we react to them, etc. Our attitudes set the “tone” for everything we do.

Aptitudes

We can have the best attitude in the world, but attitudes alone can only go so far.  We also need aptitudes.  We need talent, knowledge, and skills in order to accomplish.  Most importantly, we need to know how to best acquire talents, knowledge and skills.  In the IT profession, this ability becomes more critical, as circumstances are constantly changing and emerging.

Approach

Approach means the way we go about doing things.  It is analogous to strategy, method, or even tactics.  It is the way we set out to accomplish something or the process we follow to get things done.  It encompasses the steps that lead to the results we accomplish.

Action

Obviously nothing happens if we do not act.  However, many of us have great vision, ideas, goals, wonderful attitudes, amazing skills and approaches, but do not take timely action or sometimes any action at all.  We spin our wheels or wait for the right time, moment, situation, circumstances, etc., until it becomes “too late”.  Thus, we miss a great opportunity or a perfect window.  We have to take ACTION if we want to be successful.

Each of these factors is important in and of itself.  Yet, it is the combination of these factors that leads to on-going and sustainable success!
