What’s the Purpose?

The purpose of this post is to make you aware of the significant value of questioning the purpose behind everything.

Few questions are as powerful and effective in today’s business as “what’s the purpose?”  Asking this question can save you lots of time, effort and money.  There must be a valid purpose to everything we do.   Purposes must align with our roles and goals in order to validate expenditures and efforts.  So often, individuals and teams get off purpose and lose track of the reason why they are doing things.  When no one verifies or validates a purpose, waste happens and misalignments result.

Check Your Purposes First

The first step you should take is to evaluate the purpose of everything you do.  Is there a valid purpose for everything you are doing? Every meeting you are holding or attending? Every report you’re asking for or producing? Every piece of hardware/software you are using, managing or planning to buy?

If you want to be efficient and effective you must do this ASAP.

Check the Purpose of Everything and Everyone

Once you get your purposes aligned, you should then question all other purposes.  Make it a habit to ask: what is this for?  What is the purpose of this?  How does this align with your roles, goals, and responsibilities? Will doing this accomplish the intention behind it?  Will spending this much get us what we want?

You have to make questioning the purpose of something a habit to the point that it becomes second nature.  It needs to be ingrained in your brain, and ultimately, in the organization’s culture.

This mindset is one of the most simple, yet effective ways to save significant time, effort and resources both human and financial.
