Seven A’s of Accomplishment: Attitude
In an earlier post, I identified and briefly described the “Seven A’s of Accomplishment”:
- Ambition
- Attitude
- Aptitude
- Approach
- Action
- Absorption
- Adaptiveness
In my last post, I described the Ambition factor. In this post, I will expand upon the Attitude factor. I will do so by answering the following questions:
1. What is Attitude?
2. What are the key Attitudes?
3. How do Attitudes Impact Accomplishment?
4. How can you change/tune your Attitude?
What is Attitude?
While Ambition provides energy for action and helps us overcome challenges and obstacles encountered in the accomplishment process, Attitudes help allocate and focus the energy. Typically, attitudes are depicted as positive or negative. We have attitudes about or towards people and things. The meanings we give things develop the attitudes we have towards them. We like or dislike things based on what we think of them. Our thoughts about them come from our experiences, values and beliefs. Your attitude also affects your attention (a key component of Accomplishment).
What are the key Attitudes?
There are several key attitudes that can impact Accomplishment. Your attitude about people is one of them. Your attitude about work is another. The way you feel about money is another important attitude. What do you think your chances of success are if you think that rich folks are something negative? What do you think your chances of success are if you think “money is the root of all evil”? What do you think your chances of success are if you think “work” is hard?
How do your Attitudes impact Accomplishment?
The way you feel about things will affect how you consciously or unconsciously deal with it. Holding the wrong attitude about some people and things can sabotage your ability to accomplish. Attitudes guide our energy. Successful accomplishment requires positive, intense energy. The right attitude about people, work and money will best channel your ambition’s energy towards accomplishing your goals.
How can you change/tune your Attitude?
The best way to start an attempt to change or tune your attitudes is to carefully examine them. Assessing your key attitudes starts by being honest about your true feelings. The most effective way to do this is to examine your behavior around things and people. Be vigilant and present to observe your reaction about people, money and work. How do you feel when you see, get, give, save, or spend money? How do you react when you see someone in a nice car or big home? How do you feel when you have to do work, homework, or spend any effort?
Once you have an honest assessment of your attitudes, examine the relationship of those attitudes to the things you aim to accomplish. Finally, determine if the attitudes you hold toward people and things are helpful or detrimental toward accomplishing your aim.
I hope the above will help you gain a better understanding of the importance Attitudes have towards Accomplishment.
